Today I want to focus on a creative journal prompt. Imagine your life as a map. What’s the terrain like?
Are you climbing mountains, walking through forests, or sailing calm seas?
Visualizing your journey can help you see where you’ve been, where you are, and where you want to go.
This can be a fun exercise to do with a partner or loved-one. Map out your shared journey and where you’d like it to lead. How will you get there?
What might get in the way? All of this is great material for your journal or paperback notebook.
Journal Prompt: If your life were a map, what would it look like? What’s the next destination?
When I went through this journal prompt with my journaling group they came up with some great answers. Here are a few from people who gave me permission to share on this blog:
"Sometimes my life map feels like a desert, with long stretches of uncertainty. But even in the desert, there are oases—moments of peace and clarity that keep me moving forward."
"My life map is like a river, flowing and constantly in motion. It has its calm stretches and rapids, but it always keeps me moving toward new horizons and showing me how far I've come. Exploring new waterways is my next destination."
"My life map is like a dense forest, full of twists and turns. It can be overwhelming at times, but it's also rich with hidden paths and unexpected discoveries. Finding a new patch to plant seeds is my next destination."
Terrain Features:

-
Rivers: Flowing gently or rapidly, rivers symbolise change and movement. They remind us that life is in constant motion, with moments of calm and turbulence.
-
Forests: Dense with mystery and opportunity, forests represent the unknown and the potential for discovery. They are places of growth and learning.
-
Valleys: These are areas of rest and reflection, where we can pause and appreciate the journey so far.
-
Coastlines: The ebb and flow of the tides here symbolise the balance between stability and change, reminding us to adapt and evolve.
Seasons:
-
Spring: A time of renewal and new beginnings, symbolising hope and potential.
-
Summer: Warm and vibrant, representing the peak of activity and fulfillment.
-
Autumn: A season of harvest and reflection, where we reap what we've sown and prepare for the future.
-
Winter: A period of quiet and introspection, where we can recharge and plan for the next cycle of growth.
Sky and Weather:
-
Sunshine: Represents joy and clarity, illuminating our path and guiding us forward.
-
Rain: Symbolises challenges and growth, nourishing the landscape and helping it flourish.
-
Stars: These are the dreams and aspirations that light up the night sky, guiding us toward our goals.
The landscape of life is a vibrant, ever-changing environment that reflects our experiences, emotions, and aspirations. It's a journey that we navigate with courage, resilience, and hope. Some of us are constantly moving toward new opportunities and some of us prefer what we already know.
